Socastee Community Amenities
There is no denying the rich history of Socastee, from the beautiful homes to the old-fashioned turn crank bridge dating back to 1936.
Home to numerous small businesses and a middle- to upper-class residential community, Socastee features access to the Intracoastal Waterway and the Waccamaw River, making waterway homes among the most sought-after in the community. In 2002 the Socastee Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This district is comprised of the Socastee Swing Bridge, a pecan grove, and three buildings dating back to the early 1800's.
In 2008, The Market Common opened at the site of the old air force base in Myrtle Beach adding a live/work village with numerous shopping, dining and recreational activities in close proximity to the epicenter of Socastee.
Socastee Historical Record
Socastee was home to a 1781 battle between American and British troops. Less than a century later, the town was established as a profitable center for turpentine and tar production. The main part of town also included a saw mill, grist mill and cotton gin. That original area is now preserved as the Socastee Historic District. The Socastee swing bridge opened in 1936, at 217 feet long and 24 feet wide. It was originally turned by a hand crank and was scheduled to be closed upon completion of a new bridge. However, the historic swing bridge remained open because traffic flow across the Intracoastal Waterway required it.
